A Window To The Past

An enigma all the more powerful because of its lucidity. Lucid form and unknown content come together in a synthesis that is a defining feature of my evolving poetic universe. When they do so a new idea of sculpture emerges.

Most intriguingly, everything there had a poetic tension between known and unknown, real and imaginary, familiar and enigmatic.

These form enigmas contain this power to slow down thought, to bring it to a standstill in an idea of origin.

They break up the frame of time. The past and the present thus become one the existence of another domain. Another dimension. Another civilization.

These sculptures are capable of letting emerge a world yet unknown. A world that invites us on experiential journeys. What they share, rather, is what I would like to call a "poetic vehicle”.

It's a project about nostalgia. In this project I designed a range of objects which were a narrative of my relationship with my childhood memories. I sought forms, materials and symbolism which captured the physical and emotional elements of my real and remembered childhood memories started by writing down different events which happened at different time points.

My work draws inspiration from traditional Chinese artifacts, deconstructing their forms to create captivating new shapes. These pieces were created based on traditional bodiless lacquerware technique, built up from countless layers of Xuan paper, and finished with natural lacquer, preserving the delicate texture of the paper.

The complex aesthetic object of contemporary life is composed of discrete parts. It can be regarded as a dis-integrated entity or, with respect to its place within a body of work, one component of a constellated whole. I try to create a single form possessing multiple referents based on its relation to other elements in a pictorial composition.

Materials:Natural Lacquer, Xuan Paper
